NINETEEN

Kingston

I’ve got a bruise from my knee up to my hip, I’ve got road rash on my elbow, my suit is ruined, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Willa ran me over with a golf cart. And kissed me.

Willa showed concern. Not just concern—worry. She’d kissed me because she was worried about me.

It hurts to bend down and scoop up Paul. But if I don’t, he’ll think he’s alone in the world. And like it or not, I can’t have that. No one deserves to feel like that. Not even this little cat.

I pick him up and he climbs up to perch on my shoulder. It’s becoming our morning routine. He sits on my shoulder like a parrot, and I make breakfast.

I pick up my phone and call Meyer. I hope she’s sleeping. I love waking up that little grump-face. What else are big brothers for?

“What on God’s green earth are you doing calling me at six thirty in the morning?” Meyer snaps as she answers the phone.

“I was wondering if Gatsby wanted a friend. A feline friend named Paul.”

“You called me at this ridiculous hour to try and get rid of your cat?” It’s the closest Meyer comes to yelling.

“Gatsby could be lonely.”

“No, you’re lonely. You need that cat more than any of us do. And yes, Bailey already told me that you tried to pawn it off on her, too. I am not the weak link in this family.”

“You are the nicest one.”

“And I’m saying no. You take care of your cat.”

“He’s not my cat!”

“Then make posters and try to find his owner! Although, he’s probably a cat someone purposefully dumped off. The stray cat problem is getting out of hand.”

Paul reaches his paws into my hair and begins kneading. “He does have a biting problem…”

“You two are perfect for each other.”

“I promise, I rarely bite. Only sometimes.”

“I’m not even gonna think about going there with you on that conversation.” She sighs, and I hear a door slam. “I had to come outside because Archie is still sleeping.”

“I should have called his phone.”

“No, you shouldn’t have. I’m going to block your number if these early morning calls become a habit. But I am actually glad you called because I’d like to have a little chat with you about something.”

“Why do I feel like I’m in trouble?” I slide a couple of fried eggs onto my plate, then break off a bite to feed to Paul.

He jumps down onto the counter, trying to get the rest of the eggs. “Not today, buddy.” I scoop him off the counter and deposit him in the laundry room, where his litter box and food are. I close the door so that we can both eat our breakfast in peace.

“You hired Willa.” It’s an accusation, not a question.

“Of course I did. Don’t worry, though; she said she wouldn’t drop you as a client. You’re safe.”

She’s sipping something, probably her coffee. “You know I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about her as a friend.
